Dr. Maria Pollard (Assistant Dean: Education)

Dr Maria Pollard, the Assistant Dean for Education in our School has recently published an updated second edition of her book ‘Evidence-Based Care for Breastfeeding Mothers: A Resource for Midwives and Allied Healthcare Professionals’

Maria based the book on the revised UNICEF Baby Friendly learning outcomes. The textbook guides students and healthcare professionals who support breastfeeding mothers with the essential knowledge, evidence and skills to effectively promote, support and protect breastfeeding mothers.

Maria’s main areas of interest are breastfeeding, education, supervision of midwives and normal childbirth. She completed a doctorate in education, exploring how student midwives learn about breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding continues to be a major public health issue and UWS remains the only university in the UK to have both its Midwifery and Health Visiting education fully accredited by UNICEF UK Baby Friendly.
